Why I love this place

Despite its small size, Mykonos is home to over 800 churches and chapels. There are so many because it was a tradition for sailors to build a private chapel as a thank-you to God for returning safely from a dangerous voyage. San Marco Mykonos Hotel. The island has a strict traditional color code for its houses. While the walls must be whitewashed (originally a 1930s hygiene measure to combat cholera), the woodwork—doors, windows, and balconies—traditionally followed a specific rule: sailors painted theirs blue, farmers chose green, and everyone else used red.
